How did you get into the music scene?
I grew up in the age of home computing and was a kid when dance music blew up in the UK so sampling is something that's quite natural to me. I really started off on an Amiga 500 with a Turbosound cartridge on the back. From there I started DJ-in on pirate radio, I was a DJ in Spain for many years, and put out a few garage records. I decided to quit writing music in 2004 out of frustration really and I went to study. Then a few years later someone gave me a copy of Logic. I just installed it on a whim really. I ended up entering a remix competition for a band called the Infadels which I won under the name Mr. B, eventually that changed to Fear of Tigers. That was my rehabilitation into making music again.

¡Afortunadamente no!

Why did you choose Fear of Tigers as your artistic name? Is it a pun with some childhood trauma involving tigers?
Fortunately not! It's a name that came from nowhere. Literally when I was putting the Infadels remix up I had to choose a myspace URL. All the pretentious names I wanted were taken and Fear of Tigers popped into my head almost from nowhere. So I like to think the name chose me and since it's come to symbolize many different things in my music.

“Cossus Snufsigalonica” was your debut album in 2009. Why did you feel like giving away for free at your site? How do you feel about the álbum after all this time?
I think of it warmly, although it's difficult for artists to judge their own work objectively. But I can say the friends it's made me and the doors it's opened have been wonderful. I guess I try to make music that I like. The album is messy, over compressed but that's exactly the kind of what I'm into. I occasionally get complaints from people who are upset that I've used too much compression, or that the tracks are distorted in places. For me that's all part of it. If you want clean, slick, well balanced music there is a lot of good stuff out there. But that's not me, at least not right now.

The album remained unreleased for a number of reasons. Lack of interest from labels, sample clearance issues etc. What I will do is release some of the tracks as Eps next year with new remixes.

Now you’re releasing your first oficial single on the 16th of December. What will we find in it?
It's called Kaohsiung Christmas and has three tracks. The video for the title track was filmed on location in Taiwan by up and coming director Chia-Yi Lin. She did an awesome job. There is a B-side called Hey, Can We Go Back? and I've also included Hidup, an older track but one that was my first winter themed song.

You’ve been working on the sequel of your debut, “Hypnerotomachia Poliphili”, you even premiered a teaser some weeks ago for a few hours but then you deleted it. How is the project progressing?
It'll be out early next year I promise! I know a lot of people have been waiting a long time for it and I've been very bad at communicating to them. Outside of Fear of Tigers I do a lot of writing and production for others, there are a few things I've been public about but for the most part I prefer to keep off the radar as I think FOT fans would be disappointed. For example, I love Stuart Price's remixes and solo work but I'm not particularly interested in some of his productions. That's not to put him down. He's an incredible producer. But if you're making a Take That record it needs to sound like Take That not Stuart Price. Now of course you'll get a little bit of him in there but typically when the stakes are so high and the record companies put so much money in, it needs to sounds commercial. It would be really interesting for Stuart to get Take That and produce them in a Thin White Duke or Jaques Lu Cont style, but that's just not going to happen sadly.

Anyhow, my excuse is that I've been busy. But I have an album with about 12 – 14 maybe more tracks. I'll put it out on my own label next year. Is it good? I don't know. It's similar to the first one in many ways but it is a new album so should be listened to as something different. I'm sure some people will like it and others won't, who knows?

Your music and your remixes are like a shot of happiness into the brain, almost a message of optimistic energy for the dancefloor. What is the most beautiful thing you’ve been told about your work?
Probably that right there! Getting praise is a double edged sword. I'm very grateful for the people who've stuck by me over the years. There's a handful of people around the globe who have and they give me the impetus to make more FOT records.

But you have to be careful on the internet about praise and criticism, from fans or from journalists. A guy I know updates his Facebook page almost every ten minutes with what he's listening to. And every other record is 'the best in the world' or 'amazing'. So you have to be careful when people say things like that. I wouldn't believe it. Similarly when people criticize you or leave negative sentiments they can be ignored too. Maybe they were expecting something else or just didn't get it. But again, the people who actually get and support FOT, they are the good ones, the ones who keep it going.

Kylie Minogue

It’s hard to mention everyone you’ve remixed: Kylie, Ellie Goulding, La Roux, Alcazar, Bright Light Bright Light, Mariah Carey… How do you choose which song to remix and how do you do it?
For all the tracks you mentioned, I was asked by either the label, the producer or the artist. The exception in that list is Mariah. That was for fun. But typically I do things becuase I know the people or I'm into the project.

Was there any hard song to work with? And is there any song that you’re looking forward to remix?
I remember the Bright Light Bright Light remix. I spent ages on the first remix but I just couldn't get it to work. So I threw it all away and started again with something totally different, I was pleased with the second remix, that the one that out there. The same but to a lesser extent with Kylie. Sometimes the best songs are the hardest to remix. Vanbot 'Lost Without You' was really tough because the original was so amazing. I don't think I did the original track much justice. But the Kylie remix I still like I think that was nice. She's started using it when she does live shows which is pretty much the ultimate accolade for me.

The Sound of Arrows

I specially like your two remixes for The Sound of Arrows, and that makes me think… Have you ever produced a band or would you like to? Have your received any propositions for doing it?
Yea I have produced for others. But I've come to realise it's not something that I do particularly well. You know most bands have this very strong idea of who they are and what they want to sound like. And if they don't they'll at least know what they don't want to sound like.
So take the Sound of Arrows for example. I got to know them fairly well, they made a lot of their album in London. I was around. And they liked my remixes. But they didn't want to make a record like that. They have their own unique style. If I'd have had my way they would have sounded very different. But trying to overlay my ideas on theirs would never have worked. They are very headstrong guys.
I think a good producer is a diplomat. Someone who can see the big picture, steer the band in the right direction, be a confidant, a peace maker perhaps even a therapist sometimes.
I'm terrible at all those things.
If an artist ever came to me and said – these are the songs, do what you want. I'd be interested. But typically artists aren't like that.

So the things I have produced over the years have very little me or FOT in them if any. I've had to sit back and work on music I sometimes dislike, try and make it sound good and realise the artists vision. It's a good exercise to get you out of your own small world of music but I have no aspirations to be the next Brian Eno, or Stuart Price, as much as admire them.

You make dance music, but what does Fear of Tigers listen to when you’re not working on any songs?
I'm right across the board. Everything from choral music to hip-hop.
But those times when I need music like a therapy, things like Sigur Ros, Neon Indian, The Pixies, The Cure.
And for when I want to feel good it's usually black music Kirk Franklin, The Clark sisters, Luther Vandross.
And also more instrumental things too, Philip Glass, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Ennio Morricone even JS Bach.
Another big passion is late 80s early 90s piano house, it has such a deep and rich history. I'd like to write a book about it one day. I don't think anyone has really written in detail about it yet.

I love techno too, the old Detroit stuff, anything Carl Cox plays or Umek puts out on his label. I could talk about this for a long time but I'll stop there!

I would like to know your perfect 10 songs for the dancefloor.

A big part of the world is suffering from an economic crisis. Can music help us to improve or at least give us a more positive spirit?
Yes! It might be considered naïve to think that music has a similar power to that of armies, politics or market forces but it does.
It's often considered to be a soft power but with passage of time the soft typically overcomes the hard. For example water eroding mountains. I believe peace is a long process. As far as I've seen within my own lifetime, violent revolution or military intervention from outside (regardless of its intentions), usually just brings a new set of oppressors. I think the Egyptian revolution and the Iraq war are very good examples of this.
Gandhi on the other hand harnessed a soft power, defeated an empire and for the most part left a peaceful country.
Similarly a very important contributing factor to the fall of the Berlin Wall was a rock festival that had taken place on the West side of the wall in 1987. East Germans heard the music and climbed trees to watch what was happening and would later breach the wall and cross to the West.

But music can be used in a very destructive way too. The composer Richard Wagner essentially created the mythos of a germanic master-race in his operas and some say encoded anti-Semitic ideas within them, certainly his anti-Semitic writings are well documented. Wagner and his operas had a big impression on Hitler who obviously took these ideas to extreme and horrific ends.
So as creators, in whatever you do, be it making music or updating your blog or even just writing a Facebook update, we should try to use this power for good.
Of course art can also tell human stories, but let's face it most artists want success and if that comes by shocking people or even upsetting them, they'll do it for their own ends.
Personally I want to bring something positive to the world. We live in a world where suffering is all around us if we choose to look. I don't think we need it in the arts too, at least not in a gratuitous way.

I know you lived in Tenerife. How do you see Spanish music culture when compared to that of UK?
I think the key difference is that Spain has a much older and established musical tradition. Styles like flamenco have influenced the culture of entire nations.
Plus because of the common language Spain is more likely to import music back from Latin America.
For that reason, when you visit Spain I'm always struck by the amount of latin and domestic music. It seems to be in the blood.
The folk music of the UK is largely forgotten by the majority of the population, it's a niche genre for the most part and hasn't really travelled much.

Even if we think of the great classical composers it's hard to name more than a couple of British ones. Even Handel was German.
So after the war the UK imported, copied and re-exported the music of the USA.
I'm not sure there are too many genre's the UK can really claim for itself. But Drum and Bass might be one and Dubstep another.
But the what's interesting about both the Spain and the UK is how it adopted and accepted electronic music in the 90s. Ibiza, Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid are important places for dance music as are London, Glasgow, Manchester and Bristol. Both nations are have proved to be fertile ground. Many other countries are still catching up.

Having said all that, I find the very idea of the nation state to be flawed. I feel more like a citizen of the word. The former trader Nicholas Nassim Taleb puts this argument across very well in his books, The Black Swan and Antifragile.

Any current bands you’d recommend us?
The one guy I'd look out for from the UK is MNEK. He's 19 Years old. Writes, produces, can sing four octaves and has impecable taste. He's putting an album out next year. It'll be really interesting to hear. I hope the label he's signed too dones't fuck it up.

What’s the difference between Fear of Tigers and Benjamin Berry?
One is this crazy guy and who hides in the corner afraid that tigers might take him and make him one of their own. The other is the same, but he wants to be taken by the tigers.

Una frase útil para la vida
Come bien, caga mucho y no tengas miedo a la muerte.

A life motto.
Eat well, shit strongly and do not be afraid of death.

Time for a big farewell, say what you want.
A big thank you to everyone who has stuck by me through the years. The second album will be out in the next few months, I promise!
