Alexander Bard: "Todo lo humano gira en torno a la fuerza de la líbido"

Siempre me ha impresionado esa gente que tiene la creatividad como forma de vida. Alexander Bard, además, lo comparte con una humildad que se ve en pocos artistas a la hora de responder de una forma abierta a las entrevistas.

Acaba de lanzar con su grupo Gravitonas nuevo EP, Garden of Men and Machines (SoFo Records, 2014): seis temas para bailar, mientras sigue también en Army of Lovers, metido en temas políticos, y lanzando publicaciones sobre Sociología y Filosofía. ¿Un renacentista en el siglo XXI? Es posible.

En esta entrevista hablaremos de su nuevo EP, de sus anteriores grupos musicales, de Alcazar, el Melodifestivalen, de sexo, de la prostitución, de los tabús... Lo que se dice una entrevista completa. Como dice uno de mis lemas vitales, extraído de un tema del grupo BWO del que formaba parte, 'It's a brand new day, things will go my way'.

Gravitonas estrenáis nuevo EP, ‘Garden of Men and Machines’, donde de nuevo volvéis a conseguir crear canciones que consiguen enganchar a la primera escucha, ¿Cómo ha sido el proceso de creación?
Trabajamos en dos estudios diferentes en Estocolmo. El estudio de Andrea y Ben en el norte y el de Hanrik y Alexander en el sur de la ciudad. Las pistas van de un estudio a otro hasta que están terminadas. Es un proceso muy fluido, básicamente un montón de trabajo haciendo que cada pista salga bien.

Gravitonas you released a new EP, 'Garden of Men and Machines', in which you achieve again creating catchy songs. How was the creative process?

We work in two different studios in Stockholm. Andreas' and Bens studio in the north and Hanrik's and Alexander's studio in the south of the city. The tracks then move back and forth between the two studios until they're finished. It's all a very smooth process, basically just lots fo hard work getting the feeling right for each track.

Un detalle curioso es que, aunque no se publica en formato físico, dejáis el artwork colgado para que la gente pueda hacérselo en su propia casa, en plan ‘Art Attack, ¿Puro romanticismo musical?
Fue idea de Nicolas Gerin, nuestro diseñador de material gráfico. Él es un gran fan del pop en general pero también lo es del artwork clásico. Y en estos días donde la música es en stream o descargada de internet tenemos que encontrar nuevos lugares donde crear y distribuir gran material gráfico. Así que el mérito es de Nicolas por este experimento.

A cool fact is, even though a hard copy won't be available, you’ve opened the artwork on the internet for people to make their own, almost like "Art Attack" mode. Is that pure musical romanticism?

It was our artwork designer Nicolas Gerin's idea, he's a huge pop fan in general but also a fan of classic artwork. And these days when music is streamed or downloaded from the web we need to find new places where to create and distribute great artwork. So you should credit Nicolas for this experiment.

Gravitonas cumple en 2014 cinco años como grupo, ¿Qué has aprendido en estos años de tus compis de aventuras musicales?
Espero habernos vuelto mejores músicos, productores y compositores en el proceso. Y por supuesto hemos viajado por el mundo, visto un montón de diferentes lugares, conocido un montón de gente interesante, hecho nuevos amigos y lo hemos pasado realmente bien. También es conveniente tener tu propia banda cuando eres compositor y productor, ya que esto ha hecho que sea aún más fácil para nosotros trabajar para otros artistas también. Por ejemplo Andreas y Ben han disfrutado de un increíble éxito como compositores y productores en Japón, Korea y China.

Gravitonas will be 5 years as a band in 2014, what have you learned from your being around those guys?

I hope we have become even better musicians, producers and songwriters in the process. And we have of course traveled the world, seen lots of different places, met lots of interesting people, made new friends and had a really good time. It's also convenient to have your own band when you're songwriters and producers, as this has made it even easier for us work for other artists too. Andreas and Ben have for example enjoyed amazing success as songwriters and producers in Japan, Korea and China.

En 2013 Army of Lovers os volvisteis a juntar para participar en el Melodifestivalen con ‘Rockin’ the Ride’ ¿Cómo te sentiste de nuevo en el escenario tras las participaciones con BWO?
Se trata de dos bandas muy diferentes. Army Of Lovers es un drama constante, BWO es como un paseo fácil. La fuerza de Army Of Lovers es su influencia política, la banda se reunió para combatir la creciente homofobia y el antisemitismo en la Europa del este. La fuerza de BWO era su gran destreza en el pop.

In 2013 you got together with Army of Lovers to participate in Melodifestivalen contest with 'Rockin' the Ride'. How did you feel on stage after taking part with BWO?

These are two very different bands. Army Of Lovers is constant drama, BWO is just like a smooth easy ride. Army Of Loers strength is its political clout, the band was reunited to fight growing homophobia and antisemitism in Eastern Europe. BWO's strength was just enormous pop craftsmanship.

Además Army of Lovers y Gravitonas se han enlazado en dos canciones, cada una para su grupo, en formato dueto, ¿Cómo es hacer un feat. Con dos grupos en el que formas parte?

Yo hago de intermediario, el nexo de unión de las dos bandas. Y mis actuaciones, cantando en ambas pistas (como hago a menudo para Army Of Lovers) y mis looks en los videos y tal son las fusión de las imágenes de las dos bandas. Fue muy divertido de hacer, conectando el principio y el final de mi carrera en la música.

Also Army of Lovers and Gravitonas have worked together in two songs, each one for each band. How is it doing a feature with two groups you’re apart of?

I play the middle man, the link connecting the two bands. And my performances, singing on both tracks (like I would often do for Army Of Lovers) and my looks in the videos, etc, are mergers of the images of the two bands. It was just a lot of fun to do, connecting the beginning and the end of my career in music.

La primera vez que te entrevisté, hace dos años, hablábamos que Universal Music Spain pensaba traer a Gravitonas a nuestro país, ¿Qué sucedió? ¿Hay opciones de veros por aquí en directo o tendremos que viajar?
Constantemente hay nuevos planes y prioridades y España es, por desgracia, uno de los pocos países en los que Gravitonas tiene que actuar aún. Nuestro enfoque ha sido principalmente en Europa del este, Grecia, Escandinavia y por supuesto éxitos en un montón de clubes en los Estados Unidos.

First time I interviewed you two years ago, we talked about Universal Music Spain wanting to bring Gravitonas to our country, what happened? Is there any chance of seeing you on stage here or will we have to travel?

There are constantly new plans and prioritites and Spain is unfortunately one of the few countries where Gravitonas have yet to perform. Our focus has mainly been Eastern Europe, Greece, Scandinavia and of course the many club chart successes in the United States.

Co-Produjiste los dos primeros discos de Alcazar, ¿Cómo fue el trabajo con ellos? ¿Has visto su actuación este pasado Melodifestivalen? ¡su salida al escenario fue genial!

Alcazar son muy profesionales y es muy fácil trabajar con ellos. Originalmente desarrollé la banda con Andreas Lundstedt y entonces llegaron las chicas. Su sonido es siempre de discoteca a tope con una actitud glamurosa, ideal para un trío de pop sueco.

You co-produced the first two albums of Alcazar . How it was working with them? Did you get to see their performance during the last Melodifestivalen?

Alcazar are very professional and easy to work with. I originally developed the band with Andreas Lundstedt and then the girls came along. Their sound is always full-on disco with a glamorous attitude, perfect for a Swedish pop trio.

Has hablado abiertamente de temas como la prostitución o las drogas, ¿Sigue habiendo muchos temas que son tabús en la sociedad?
Supongo que siempre hay un montón de cosas que son tabú en la sociedad a pesar de que no debería ser así. Ojalá la gente tuviera muchos menos complejos con el sexo y las drogas, eso es todo.

You have talked openly about topics such as prostitution or drugs, are there still many taboo topics in society you plan to talk about?

I guess there are always a lot of things that are taboo in society although they shouldn't be. I just wish people had a lot less hang-ups about sex and drugs, that's all.

Sobre la prostitución la practicaste en la juventud, ¿Qué es lo que te lleva a realizarlo?
No hubieron circunstancias que condujeran a eso. Trabajé como empleado sexual entre los 20-23 y fue un gran momento en mi vida y una experiencia muy interesante. Estoy muy orgulloso de aquel periodo aventurero de mi vida.

It is known that you practiced prostitution in your younger years, what was the reasoning behind that?

There weren't circumstances that lead to that. I worked as a sex worker between the ages of 20-23 and it was a great time in my life and a very interesting experience. I'm very proud of that adventurous period in my life.

Además dices que Freud tenía razón, todo gira en torno al sexo, ¿Cómo has llegado a esa conclusión?
¿Tienes alguna propuesta diferente, quizá? ¿Cuál sería? Sí, todo lo humano gira en torno a la fuerza de la líbido, lo cual por supuesto incluye el sexo y la sexualidad.

Also you said Freud was right, “everything revolves around sex,” how have you reached that conclusion?

Do you have any different proposal perhaps? What would that be? Yes, everyhing human revolves around the force of the libido, which of course includes sex and sexuality.

Me gusta haber leído que te llamas a ti mismo la puta de ‘Idol’, pero en sentido positivo, yo a mis amigos más cercanos les llamo Puta, pero también positivo 
Supongo que tienes que ser una mujer para ser una zorra. Pero supongo que soy el equivalente masculino de una zorra en Swedish Idol, sí, a pesar de que no me gusta mucho estereotipar de esa manera. No voy a hacer un papel en televisión, sólo estoy actuando yo mismo.

I love reading that you call yourself the 'Idol' bitch, but in a positive way. I call my closer friends "bitch" as wel… in a positive way. 

I guess you have to be a woman to be a bitch. But I suppose I am the male equivalent o a bitch in Swedish Idol, yes, although I don't really like stereotyping like that. I'm not playing a role on TV, I'm just acting myself.

También estás metido en política, donde vemos que has ido moviéndote entre diversos partidos, ¿Es complicado encontrar uno adecuado a tu estilo? ¿Qué crees que tiene que tener un partido para realmente ser útil para el ciudadano?
No, en absoluto. Me han pedido hacer diferentes proyectos para diferentes partidos políticos. Pero mi corazón siempre ha estado con The Pirate Party, al que me uní oficialmente hace poco.

You are also involved in politics and have been apart of different political parties, is it hard to find one that is suitable to you? Also, what do you think a political party really needs to be useful to citizens?

Not at all. I've been asked to do different projects for different political parties. But my heart has always been with The Pirate Party which I also joined officially recently.

¿Qué canción le dedicaría a Putin, y que dedicatoria le harías? (Izaola)
"Go West" con Village People. Putin tiene mucho que aprender de The West sobre ser modesto y tolerante. Se ha convertido en un desagradable tirano del pasado oscuro.

What song would you dedicate to Putin? And what would the dedication be? (Izaola)

"Go West" with Village People. Putin has a lot to learn from The West about being modern and tolerant. He's turned into a really unpleasant tyrant from the dark past..

¿Te has planteado la colaboración de Gravitonas o Army of Lovers con BWO? ¿O los tres juntos? (Diego)
No. BWO no están trabajando juntos de momento y por lo tanto tampoco haciendo ninguna colaboración.

Have you ever considered the collaboration of Gravitonas or Army of Lovers with BWO? Or all them together? (Diego)

No. BWO are not working together at the moment and consequently not doing any collaborations either.

¿Cuál es el momento que recuerdas con más cariño de tu experiencia con cada uno de los grupos: Army Of Lovers, BWO y Gravitonas? (Diego)

Hay tantos momentos con cada grupo que recuerdo con cariño que sería ridículo nombrar tan sólo uno de cada. Hay momentos de gran éxito y logros juntos, pero hay también muchos momentos personales e íntimos juntos fuera del escenario y en la vida privada. Por ejemplo, La Dominika de Army Of Lovers y yo tuvimos una relación en los 90.

What's your most memorable moment with each band you’ve been in? (Army, gravitonas, BWO) (Diego)

There are just too many moments with each band I remember with affection that it would be ridiculous to name just one for each of them. There are moments of great success and achievement together but there also many personal and intimate moments together off the stage and in private life. For example, La Dominika from Army Of Lovers and I also has a relationship together in the 1990s.

¿Cuándo decidiste ir con Army of Lovers al Melodifestivalen el año pasado el año pasado sabías que Martin Rolinski también lo iba a intentar? (Xurgell)

Sí.

When you decided to go to Melodifestivalen with Army of Lovers last year, did you also know that Martin Rolinski was gonna try it? (Xurgell)

Yes.

¿No te entraron ganas de ir a mancharte de pintura con él en su actuación? (Xurgell)
Jaja, No, no la tuve

Didn't you feel the urge to stain yourself with paint in his performance? (Xurgell)

Haha, nope, I did not.

¿Qué opinas de los ganadores de los Grammy suecos? ¿Qué artistas de Suecia que has estado escuchando últimamente nos recomiendas? (Diego)
En realidad no vi los ganadores suecos de los Grammy así que tendrás que decirme tú que pensaste de ellos. Hay un montón de grandes bandas suecas. Me gusta mucho Mando Diao, por ejemplo...

What do you think about swedish Grammy winners? What bands from your country would you recommend us? (Diego)

I actually did not watch the Swedish Grammy Awards so you will have to tell me what you thought of it. There are loads of great Swedish bands. I really like Mando Diao for example.
